There are two easily accessible ways to read the original Bone saga, and although some additional reading occurs chronologically before the story of Fone Bone, Smiley Bone, and Phoney Bone, I strongly recommend reading the core Bone first. ![]() Fortunately, there’s a nice array of supplemental story around the original Bone saga, and I’ll outline these stories and where they fit in context below. Again, although I loved it, it didn’t occur to me until years later (as I sat down with the chance to interview Jeff Smith) that there was more to enjoy in the Bone Universe. ![]() Like a lot of readers getting into comics, I first read Bone as part of the giant all-in-one-volume that collects the entire story, all 55 issues that ran from 1991 to 2004, in one glorious reading package. In short, Bone is an all-time classic, and frankly a bit of a miracle. Bone straddles the remarkably difficult line of status as one of Time Magazine’s 10 best graphic novels, and as the franchise that launched Scholastic’s Graphix imprint in 2005, driving the boom of all ages and young readers comics that dominates the marketplace today. Jeff Smith’s Bone is one of the greatest success stories of the 90’s self-publishing comics movement, and my third favorite graphic novel of all time. ![]() ![]() ![]() The diary continues detailing Helen’s life with an emotional, abusive husband, who drinks, gambles, and frequently leaves her for several weeks at a time while he is unfaithful. Helen would have persevered alone, but she could not allow her son to become like his father. When Gilbert reads her diary, it seems Helen has fled her marriage from an abusive, alcoholic husband and taken her son away from his bad influences. His persistence finally leads Helen to hand him her diary, and she says, “Bring it back when you have read it and don’t breathe a word of what it tells you to any living being-I trust to your honour.” Helen is very isolated and secretive, which makes her gossip for the locals. Gilbert encounters her on a walk with his dog one day, and over a period of time Helen and Gilbert become friends while he falls desperately in love with her. Helen, however, only seems to care for her son and fervently resists Gilbert’s efforts toward a closer relationship. Presumably a widow, Helen Graham is living with only one servant and her son. The sheriff even calls her a "one-woman crime wave." She may indeed seem to be as tough as a boot - after the first summer, Grandma doesn't even meet the kids at the train station she figures that they can find their own way to her house, but Joey, Mary Alice, and the reader soon come to realize that she's something of an old softy inside. Grandma is not above stretching the truth or stealing borrowing someone's boat to achieve her goals. Over the years, Grandma Dowdel gets the kids involved in all sorts of hilarious adventures - catching criminals, helping some star-crossed lovers elope, and showing up the snooty banker's wife. As the years went by though, Mary Alice and I grew up, and though Grandma never changed, we'd seem to see a different woman every summer. And tough! She was tough as an old boot, or so we thought. She was old too, or so we thought - old as the hills.
